English is an international language. It is the first foreign language in Indonesia. It is taught in the secondary and senior high school. So English is a compulsory subject. In learning English, student has to master the four language skills, namely reading, speaking, listening and writing as well as structure and vocabulary.
In a fact, student is still weak on vocabulary achievement student doesn't have an interest is learning English. This case maybe caused by the way of teaching, the teacher still focuses on theory, the technique in monotonous. So student becomes bored. Therefore this research in conducted to motivate and make student have interest in learning English through the crossword puzzle approach.
Research problem can be formulated: can the English teaching learning process by using the crossword puzzle increase vocabulary achievement of the third year student (3 IPS 2) of SMAN Rambipuji Jember? The objective is to increase student's vocabulary achievement. The hypothesis is: if the English teaching learning process uses the crossword puzzle, the student's vocabulary achievement will increase.
Crossword puzzle is one of the teachings learning process approaches used to make student motivated and have interest. The approach presents steps such as: showing picture, asking questioning, making example, and task.
Research method used in this research is the action research in cycles (I, II, and III) with steps that are as follows: planning, actuating, observing, and reflecting.
Research result from cycle I to cycle 11 and to cycle III from data that is collected shows that: (1) student's interest increases and student's test result is 17.68%, (2) teacher's performance is 6.25%.
