Hollywood Died... and No One Cares?!?

It turns out people really aren't all that attached to the celebritweeters of the world.

Or at least, not attached enough to open up their wallets.

While Kutcher wasn't actually involved in this week's social media stunt, plenty of other kings and queens of Twitter and Facebook were, as Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Kim Kardashian, Khloé Kardashian Odom, Ryan Seacrest, Usher, Alicia Keys, Elijah Wood, Lenny Kravitz, Jennifer Hudson and more sacrificed their digital lives on Dec. 1, refusing to return to the online world until $1 million is raised for Keys' Keep a Child Alive charity. The entire endeavor was staged on Wednesday in honor of World AIDS Day.

And, um, it hasn't exactly gained what you'd call momentum.

The stars vowed to hold off on making any postings until the seven-figure sum is raised, and at this rate, it may be a while.

Whether it's due to the economy, the holidays, plain old indifference to the absence of the world's supposedly most influential Twitterati, or simply ignorance—not counting the posts announcing his digital death, Timberlake only tweeted three times in the month of November…has anyone even registered his protest?—as of this morning, fans have donated just $183,966—a hefty figure, sure, but not much of a dent considering the ultimate goal.

So far, all the major digital dead have stayed true to their vow not to return, with the exception of additional postings reminding fans of their digital death and asking to donate. There have been a couple clever workarounds, though.

Janelle Monae hasn't been posting on her Twitter or Facebook, but someone has, reminding fans that, hey, Dec. 1 may have been her death day, but it was also her birthday, so wish her well! The ever-wily Kardashians, meanwhile, cleverly only sacrificed Kim and Khloé to the cause, leaving Kourtney Kardashian fully able to keep fans abreast of the many uses of mayonnaise and other updates from their current media-blitzing book tour.

However, while the donations are slow going, when the buylife.org donation site first launched, it was briefly down due to high traffic. Which doesn't seem to be a problem anymore. Calls seeking comment were not immediately returned.

Incidentally, it's unclear whether all these celebrities have made any donations to the charity themselves, or are simply punishing urging their fans to do so.
