New Book on History of Sibu

This is Wong Meng Lei on the right who has written a new book in Chinese called "Pioneer Trail of the Foochows"

The book is very beautiful with lots of pictures by the author who went on a personal trail to look up the roots of the Foochow pioneers of Sibu. He "retraced" their footsteps and wrote about their origins in China. The Foochows came from the 10 districts of the Foochow division of the Fujian Province.

The maps created by Meng Lei are beautifully readible. And it is indeed an eyeopener for any Foochow or even any Chinese who is interested in his roots in China and in the history of Chinese settlement in Sarawak.

Besides in the book you can read a very comprehensive description of all the Foochow settlements in the Rejang Basin of Sarawak. He has made detailed references to significant places in Sibu. In a way through his eyes, a part of the history of the Sibu Foochows has become very "lively" and upbeat!!

It is a job well done! Very readible. Very trendy. Very humble and cost effective edition. And Wong has given credit where credit is due to our pioneers.

The book is priced at 25 ringgit and is available in Chinese only in Sibu. I really hope English and even Bahasa Malaysia editions will be in the offing.

his email is menglei@yahoo.com and his blog is called Rejang Basin http://mengleiwong.blogspot.com which is mainly written in Chinese.
