NYScene: Frye Spring 2009 Preview

Last night, Frye held their Spring 2009 Preview at a private showing on Fifth Avenue. I couldn't wait to see what they had on tap, as I've noticed that the company's been edging their way more and more into the contemporary arena. And they're delivering really well.

My absolute favorites were a pair of snakeskin platforms and some flat sandals:

The flat sandals are actually hand-woven and specially made in Spain while the platforms are indeed genuine snakeskin, as confirmed by Frye rep Brittany Penebre, who was on hand to offer fantastic insight into each piece:

There were also some Frye classics in the line:

And some spring offerings for men:

The theme was sophisticated rustic, and all about classic American music--we aren't the only ones who've been thinking about album covers. They had an entire wall covered in them!

Paris Fashion Week: Les Shoes

Coco Chanel famously remarked that fashion begins from the bottom up. While the bottom she referred to was the streets, for this post we're going to reinterpret it to mean the shoes (I think CC would understand and even encourage it), oui?Instead of our usual, clothes-focused show review (and because I've got a *serious* shoe itch this week), we're going to do something a little different and round-up of some of the fabulous shoes featured in last week's Spring 2009 Paris shows. The Fashion Bomb gives you:

And who better to lead off than the House that Chanel built?
Chanel: playful and feminine, with touches of maribou, lace, sheer. A very 1940s feel, no?

Louis Vuitton: tribal and eye-catching. Shoes like these MUST be the focal point of your outfit in order to pull them off.

Givenchy: I can't take my eyes off the green metallic pump. Just fierce.

Christian Dior: What do you think of the fertility doll heels that caught everyone's eye? Hmmm...

Viktor & Rolf: One of my favorite designers, they didn't disappoint with distinctive, funky shoes.

Giambattista Valli: modern and sexy. The platform soles remind me of my beloved Marni from two seasons ago.

Christian Lacroix: full of bows and charms, like wearing treats on your feet.

Yves Saint Laurent: a bit high-concept. The ankle-strap ones are growing on me the more I look at them, though.

Dries Van Noten: another of my faves, these shoes deviate a bit from his normal minimalist style and have a bit of a tribal feel, too.

Throwback: Reebok Freestyle Hi-Tops

Call 'em "classics," "female Air Force Ones," or the now-infamous "54-11's", the Reebok Freestyle Hi-Top can be summed up in just one word: iconic. As a teenage girl in uptown NYC, especially, no sneaker was more definitve, and no fashion trend more beloved. And oh, the colors--sky blue, mustard, hot pink, and even the rumored, holy grail shade of chocolate (which I never confirmed really existed) were among the many hues one could stunt in.

The Freestyle, designed as an aerobic exercise shoe, debuted in April 1982 and became popular both for its sleek design and for being one of the first athletic shoes specifically made for women. It celebrated its 25th birthday in 2007 with not only its own site, but also a line of Freestyles inspired by various influences (like artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, below).

Even Paris's über-hip concept shop Collette teamed up with Reebok and streetwear line Married to the Mob to deliver their own interpretation:

Recently, supermodel Agyness Deyn designed her own group of limited edition Freestyles and there were, of course, those "Reeboks with the straps" immortalized in Flo Rida's "Get Low" (is there anything more fitting for the ultimate Around the Way Girl shoe?).
