Fat Injections / Fat Grafting

Fat injections can be an effective way to reduce wrinkles, reduce acne scarring, and regain a more youthful appearance. Fat Injections or Fat Grafting is the technique of moving fat from one area of the body to another to improve contour, correct defects or enhance features.

Fat Injections / Fat Grafting

Fat Injections / Fat Grafting

What does Fat injections Surgery Involve?

How does it work?
The fat cells taken from one part of your own body are injected back into the desired area such as the cheeks, lips or chin replenishing the skins collagen layer, smoothing lines and wrinkles and plumping out the treated area.

What areas can be treated?
The most common areas for treatment are frown lines and crows feet. They can help fill out deep facial wrinkles, creases and furrows, sunken cheeks, skin depressions and some types of scars. They can also be used to add a fuller, more sensuous look to the lips.

How is the treatment performed?
A fat-injection procedure is a two-step process. First the donor site is cleansed and then anesthetised. Then fat is harvested through a liposuction canula (tube) from the abdomen or hips and once extracted is aspirated and washed in saline to remove damaged fat cells prior to injection. Once treated the fat cells are then injected with a small syringe (after the area has been numbed) into the desired locations such as the cheeks, under the eyes, the lips, or around the mouth and lips.

Recovery after a Fat injection Procedure

How long does it last?
The long lastingness of the fat injections varies significantly with each individual patient. Some patients have reported results lasting a year or more, but the majority of patients find that at least half of the injected fullness disappears within 3-6 months. Repeat injections may, therefore, be necessary.

How long will the treatment and recovery take?
Multiple injections are required to achieve the desired result. The treatment usually takes about 90 minutes depending on how many injections are needed to achieve your goals. You should be able to leave the same day that you have the treatment. Recovery time will depend on the extent of the procedure but normally is a week to 10 days. Patients can usually return to work within a few days to a week.

Are there any side effects?
As with any medical treatments procedure there can be side effects. Most people experience some swelling and redness for the first 24-48 hours. Itching and mild discomfort is not uncommon. There is no risk from allergic reaction because the fat is harvested from your own body. Infection is extremely rare and if needed antibiotics will be given for 5 days.

Mini Facelift or S Lift-Short Scar Facelift Surgery

There are many alternative techniques to reposition and tighten the skin and soft tissue structures of the face. One of the most significant recent developments in facial aesthetic surgery is the ability to limit the scarring. These procedures are known by various names such as the short-scar facelift, mini facelift, and the S-lift.

Mini Facelift Mini Facelift

What is a short scar facelift?
A short-scar facelift is a lift that repositions the skin and soft tissues of the face that have been affected by the aging process. The principle difference between a short-scar lift and othe types of facelift is that the short-scar lift features a significantly reduced scar burden. The scarring in the crease behind the ear and in the hairline behind the ear is largely or completely eliminated.

Where are the incisions for a short-scar facelift?
The incisions and ultimately the scars for a short-scar lift begin in the temporal hair area and are extend downward, in front of the ear to the earlobe. Sometimes the incision can extend behind the earlobe or slightly behind the ear. The choice of placing the scar in the crease just in front of the ear or within the ear itself is determined by individual patient anatomy. An alternative incision is to place the incision along the temporal hairline, rather than within the temporal hair.

Woman After Mini Facelift

Who are the best candidates for short-scar facelifts?
The short-scar facelift is particularly suitable on younger patients in their thirties, forties and sometimes fifties. It can be combined with liposuction in the neck area or blepharoplasty to give a remarkable overall improvement.

Recovery after a Mini Facelift Procedure

What is the recovery time?
You should be up and about in a day or two, but plan on taking it easy for the first week after surgery. At the beginning, your face may look and feel rather strange. Your features may be a little swollen and your facial movements may be slightly stiff. Some bruising may persist for two or three weeks. By the third week, you'll look and feel much better. Most patients are back at work about ten days to two weeks after surgery. Avoid strenuous activity, including sex and heavy housework, for at least two weeks. Above all, get plenty of rest and allow your body to spend its energy on healing.

What can I expect from the surgery?
Having a short-scar facelift doesn't stop the clock. Your face will continue to age with time, in another sense, the effects of even one facelift are lasting; years later, you'll continue to look better. You will find that the loose skin will be reduced giving the face a much softer, refreshed and younger look.

Anti Aging Surgery Procedures

Blepharoplasty (Eye Bag Removal)
This is a popular procedure that can restore a youthful look through the removal of fat and excess skin from both sets of eyelids (upper and lower). The problems of drooping eyelids and puffy eye bags can be addressed with this simple and effective cosmetic surgery procedure.

Brow Lift
The Brow Lift is a cosmetic surgery procedure that concentrates on restoration in the upper part of the face, correcting drooping eyebrows and loose skin in that area. A subtle operation that takes 1-2 hours to complete, the Brow Lift usually includes an overnight stay in the cosmetic surgery clinic you have chosen for your operation.

Facelift (Rhytidectomy)
Facelift surgery is the procedure most commonly perceived as the one that challenges the most visible signs of the aging process, when loose facial and neck skin is removed to produce a smoother, fresher appearance. The operation can take between two and three hours and it is recommended that patients spend at least one night in the cosmetic surgery clinic after the procedure, sometimes two.

Fat Injections
Also referred to as Fat Grafting, this procedure takes fat from one part of the body and places it in the area to be worked upon, such as the cheeks or chin. This is a procedure that may require repeat treatments in order to maintain the desired effect, which each visit lasting approximately 1.5 hours.

More Anti Aging Surgery

Liposuction
Once the seemingly obsessive preserve of the Hollywood A-list and the wealthy, Liposuction is now regarded as a mainstream surgery procedure, such has been its success and increasing popularity over the last few years. The procedure entails the removal of fatty deposits from any part of the body, taking 1-1.5 hours to complete. A particularly appealing aspect of Liposuction is that the recovery time involved is minimal, with most patients getting on with their lives again within a few days.

Mini Facelift
This particular cosmetic surgery procedure is also known by other names including the Short Scar Facelift and S-Lift and is a relatively recent development in the field of facial surgery. The Mini Facelift is gaining in popularity due to the fact that scarring from this operation is minimal, though the desired effect is often as impressive as a full facelift.

Neck Lift (Platysmaplasty)
The neck is an area of the human body that ages quickly, most often resulting in sagging skin that can even detract from signs of aging in the face. Where those who wish to address this problem may feel that a facelift is the answer, a Neck Lift could be what is required. Cosmetic Surgery Consultants can of course fully advise you on which procedure is best for you. A Neck Lift takes around two hours and an overnight stay at the cosmetic surgery clinic is usual.

Radio Controlled Planes - Sibu Padang

In the 1970's and 1980's Sibu had a new craze led by Dr. Ding Siew Hua - Radio Controlled Planes. If I am not mistaken, a club was even formed to gather more enthusiasts together. One of the enthusiasts was an alumni of Methodist School, and a student of mine - Wong KXX XXX. When he went to study in Australia he brought his hobby along. I am wondering if he had continued his hobby to this day.

As a young mother then I took my kids to watch the planes flying from , and over, the Sibu Padang which was originally named King George Memorial Ground for the Duke of Edinburgh's visit. It was good for children to learn about aeronautics and let their imagination develop. Einstein once said that "Imagination is everything. It is a preview of life's coming attraction." And thus stories began to build up in everyone's mind , set against the beautiful setting sun, tall coconut trees, amidst diverse races and religion, rich and poor in Sibu.

This padang has the most unusual history as there were so many name changes ,as and when VVIPs came to visit. We just called it the Padang as there has has been too many name changes and today, it is not even there! Sibu has this habit of painting names over with new names. It is sad that this is happening and I am worried that in the end there is very little historical meaning and value in many places and buildings our previous generation built.

It was always good to bring the kids out to "makan angin" in the padang in those days. And fresh air did do wonders. This activity brought back a lot of memories because I remember when we were younger, parents did not know where to bring their children for recreation!! The highlight of any one's life was a visit to the old Sibu Airport and watch panes take off and land!! The evening time was the best to visit the old Sibu Airport then.

It is interesting that a check on the Net reveal a few quick facts about rc flying:
It's never been so easy or affordable to get started in rc flying as it is today.

RC airplanes & helicopters are easier to fly and more available than ever before.

RC airplane clubs are more common now than ever before.

Almost anyone can enjoy flying rc aircraft of all kinds.

RC flyers are a very friendly and helpful bunch of people!

The Rattan and Wood Plantation Chair

My paternal grandfather owned a very beautiful rattan and wood plantation chair which he loved. It was very similar to the one in the photo. In fact this kind of chair is very hard to find unless one can find an antique shop which stocks this model. This type of chairs were very popular in the 1920's. Indians and the Thais made a lot of these chairs for the South East Asian market.

Grandfather would sleep on it in the afternoon as he had this siesta habit. The chair was very cool and airy because of the rattan used. He placed this chair in his little room where he had some privacy from children and visitors. Having very set habits no one should disturb his afternoon rest and my grandmother made sure that the rules were kept in the house.

Sometimes we naughty children would climb up the beautiful chair and try to sleep in it. But unfortunately, because we were small, we could not raise our feet onto the foot rest and the chair was too long for us. So we did not have the pleasure of getting a good afternoon's rest in this excellent, ergonomically made chair.

We will always remember with fondness that we tried our best not to disturb grandfather when he was having his afternoon sleep.

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

A Tummy Tuck is a procedure that will remove excess fat and skin from around the waist and removes excess skin to leave a flatter, lower body profile and younger-looking abdomen.

Tummy Tuck Surgery Procedure

Most commonly during a tummy tuck procedure, the surgeon will make a long incision from hipbone to hipbone just above the pubic area. A second incision is then made to free the navel from surrounding tissue. Your surgeon will then separate the skin from the abdominal wall and will lift a large skin flap to reveal the vertical muscles in your abdomen.

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

The muscles are then pulled together and stitched into a new position so that they are tighter. The peeled back flap of skin and fat is then stretched downwards towards the initial incision and any extra tissue is removed.

The incision is subsequently sutured closed but not before a new hole is cut for your navel which is then also stitched leaving a flatter and younger looking abdomen.

How long does tummy tuck surgery take?

Depending on the technique used and whether this is combined with any other surgery, such as Liposuction, it usually takes between 1-2 hours. Depending on the extent of surgery, you will have to stay in hospital for 1-2 nights.

What can I expect from the surgery?

You have to be realistic in your expectations. The effects of tummy tuck are generally long lasting provided you follow a balanced diet and exercise regularly. Abdominoplasty produces excellent slimming and shaping results, giving a flatter and tighter abdomen.

Recovery after Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

What will happen in the recovery period?

Your abdomen will naturally be swollen for the first few days, but medication will control the pain. You may have a couple of pillows placed behind your knees in order to keep these bent to reduce the tension in your abdominal muscles. You may not be able to stand up straight away although you should start walking about as soon as possible. All stitches are usually the dissolving type, however, any clips will be taken out after 5 days if used.

A comfortable support garment should be worn for six weeks and you will have follow-up visits in the months after surgery to check on your progress.

What is the recovery time?

The recovery depends on each individual patient. Some return to work after only two weeks while others take three or four weeks to recuperate. You can usually expect to be back to full activity after six weeks. Heavy lifting or strenuous activity is not advised in the first 6 weeks after tummy tuck surgery. Moderate exercise such as walking or swimming is recommended until this time.

Barefoot Basketball Players

We were just nice kids on the block. One part of the Methodist Secondary School was called English Department and the other part was called Chinese Department. We had one Principal, and two senior assistants who each looked after the two different departments.

Students were wary of each other. One department had lessons all conducted in English and we were made up of Ibans, Chinese, Malays, Melanaus and a few Kayans. We all spoke English pretty well and all our books were in English.

The Chinese Department students were all Chinese and they spoke Chinese or their own dialects. It was not fashionable at that time for non Chinese to be studying in a Chinese school.

Socially we were quite divided by the language differences. Sometimes we had basketball competitions between the two departments. And we felt that the schism was also amongst the teachers although they tried to be very civil to each other, pretending that there was no divide.

On one of the tournaments I noticed that some of the boys from the Chinese Department were playing barefooted. But I knew that many students at that time did practice without wearing shoes.

"Kaki ayam" or barefootedness was nothing new to us at that time. It was either the boy could not afford the shoes or he was used to playing without shoes.

On the day of one particular game between Form Four Boys and the Senior Middle Class, the boys played on the hot cement court next to the library at about four in the evening. The Chinese boys of course played very well. One of the Chinese boys was barefooted.

Upon seeing that I sort of concentrated on the barefooted boy's playing. He played very well. He was just not conscious of the fact that he was barefooted. It was a heart melting moment for me. And not long after that I noticed to my surprise two of the boys in the English Department team also took off their shoes, the blue rubber and cloth basket shoes which today would be as cheap as peanuts for most people. This was a very impactful on me.

In spite of the differences boys could sense that perhaps fairness needed to be brought about.

Naturally the English Department team lost as they were weaker and less talented players. But the gesture helped cement the good relationship amongst the different races in the school. My heart still went out to any boy or girl who played basketball barefooted then.

Years later when I started teaching, after getting my qualifications, I went to teach in a government school where basketball was popularly played amongst the multi racial student population. And the boys and even the girls played either barefooted or wearing their school shoes. It was a kind gesture that the Principal who decided to pay for some of the basketball shoes for the students when they went on tournaments. The teams looked wonderful handsome and were full of new confidence. They won a few inter-school tournaments. The school paid for their jerseys.

Today life is just too good for our youths. They could buy the best shoes , with the best brands and for any kind of activity. With all the knowledge about sports injuries, most parents are absolutely careful and therefore would pay through their nose for the right shoes. But I am sure somewhere out there, there are still boys and girls who play basket ball barefooted.

I am glad that many of my humble friends go jungle trekking wearing 7 ringgit Sarawak Addidas.

Would you still play basketball barefooted today?

Mosquito Nets

What a beautiful picture!! It has a thousand tales to tell.

Lat's take on or cartoon drawings of mosquito nets sent me laughing for a long time. And he got me to remember the old square mosquito nets in the old house inb Hua Hong Ice Factory. And that there were lots of stories to tell about mosquito nets. My two siblings and I, before the rest were born were often put under one single mosquito net so that we could not be bitten by the huge mosquitoes flying around at night. All windows did not have mosquito netting at that time.

In the day time, we were often placed under a mosquito net when adult relatives and visitors came. My mother had this ingenius way of keeping us under curfew or "Kurong". She later told us that we were very well behaved and we never did crawl out of the mosquito net.

My father always slept under a mosquito net by habit. He could not sleep without one. And in those days Sibu seemed to be cooler and we did not even need a fan at night. Two big windows in a bed room, without any mosquito netting , was airy enough. So a rich, well made mosquito net was a beautiful addition to a lovely tropical bedroom.

There have been several good paintings of mosquito nets in bedrooms and of course today, fashionable magazines often advertise delectable hotel rooms with beautiful mosquito nets.

The world still loves a good mosquito net. What are your tales under a mosquito net?

Mosquito net
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A bed covered by a mosquito net.A mosquito net offers protection against mosquitos, flies, and other insects, and thus against diseases such as malaria. Its fine, see-through, mesh construction stops many insects from biting and disturbing the person using the net. The mesh is fine enough to exclude these insects, but it does not completely impede the flow of air.

Mosquito nets are often used where malaria or other insect-borne diseases are common, especially as a tent-like covering over a bed. For effectiveness, it is important that the netting not have holes or gaps large enough to allow insects to enter. Because insects can bite through the net, the net must not rest directly on the skin.

Mosquito nets treated with insecticides -- known as insecticide treated nets (ITNs) -- were developed in the 1980s for malaria prevention. These nets, impregnated with a pyrethroid insecticide like deltamethrin or permethrin, kill and repel mosquitoes. Unfortunately, standard ITNs must be replaced or re-treated with insecticide after six washes and, therefore, are not seen as a convenient, effective long-term solution to the malaria problem.

As a result, the mosquito netting and pesticide industries teamed up to develop so-called long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets (LLINs), which also use pyrethroid insecticides, but are also treated with a chemical binder that allows the nets to be washed at least 20 times, allowing use for three or more years.

Alternatives
Mosquito nets do reduce air flow to an extent and sleeping under a net is hotter than sleeping without one, which can be uncomfortable in tropical areas without air-conditioning.

One alternative for reducing mosquito bites is to use a fan to increase air flow, as mosquitoes prefer still air; however this is far less effective and less preferred to a mosquito net, in areas with insect-borne diseases.

Another alternative is to apply an insect repellent to the skin; this also may be less effective (reducing rather than eliminating bites) and may pose health risks with long-term use.

Mosquito control measures are often appropriate and effective, but may be impractical to undertake effectively on an individual or small-scale basis.

Liposuction Surgery

Fat deposits which cannot be removed by diet or exercise usually occur in areas such as the chin, chest, stomach, sides, back and thighs. Liposuction Surgery is a fat removal procedure that aims to eradicate excessive stubborn fat from these hard to shift areas. Liposuction should be thought of as a sculpting procedure that can change the contours of your body or face.

Woman liposuction

Liposuction Surgery

What does Liposuction Surgery Involve?

Liposuction is a procedure in which localised deposits of fat are removed to recontour one or more areas of the body. Through a tiny incision, a narrow tube (cannula) is inserted and used to vacuum the fat layer that lies deep beneath the skin. The cannula is pushed then pulled through the fat layer, breaking up the fat cells and suctioning them out by a vacuum pump or a large syringe.

The incision sites will be carefully chosen so that scarring is as inconspicuous as possible. Naturally fluid is lost along with the fat. To prevent shock, patients are carefully monitored and given intravenous fluids during and immediately after liposuction surgery.

How long does liposuction take?

The procedure will from one hour to 1.5 hours to complete depending on the extent of the procedure. Many patients are able to go home on the day of the surgery but some remain in the hospital for one or two days.

After Liposuction Surgery

Liposuction Surgery

What can I expect from liposuction?

Your expectations need to be realistic. You will probably be very pleased with the results. Your body shape will be noticeably different quite soon after surgery and you will generally feel more at ease with your body.

Recovery after a Liposuction Procedure

What will happen in the recovery period?

Bruising and swelling can be present for 2-4 weeks dependent upon the quantity of fat that is removed and the patient’s own healing rate. Any discomfort or pain can be relieved by painkillers and gentle walking. A supportive elastic will be worn day and night for 3 weeks and after that for a further 3 weeks during the day. Scars will be small and will fade in time, and you will have follow-up visits in the months after surgery to check on your progress.

What is the recovery time from the surgery?

Recovery time is brief, with many liposuction patients returning to work in a few days, and most back to full exercise in 12-14 days. Again this will depend on each individual patient. You can resume gentle exercise after two weeks and full exercise after one month.

What does Brow Lift Surgery Involve?

At least 4 incisions behind the hairline will be made each less than an inch long. An endoscope, which is a pencil-thin camera device that is connected to a television monitor, is then inserted through each incision in turn, enabling the surgeon to see the muscles and tissues beneath the skin. He will then remove some of these to produce the smoother and younger looking forehead. When the incisions are closed, they are done so horizontally to give additional lift to the brow.

Recovery after a Brow Lift Procedure

What will happen in the recovery period?

Patients may experience numbness and mild swelling but any discomfort should be minimal and easily controlled by medication. You may be told to keep your head elevated for two to three days following surgery to control swelling. Bandages are removed one or two days following brow lift surgery and sutures or metal clips removed in 10 days to two weeks. The scars will usually fade over 3 to 6 months and you will have follow-up visits in the months after surgery to check on your progress.

What is the recovery time from the surgery?

Most patients are on their feet in a couple of days, and back to work within two weeks. Strenuous exertion should be avoided for about a month, along with prolonged exposure to the sun. The average recovery time is between two to three weeks depending on the individual patient.

Chin Implants / Augmentation Surgery

Through the ages, strong chins have been considered signs of beauty. Chin augmentation, is a surgical procedure that has helped thousands of people improve their appearance by changing the contours of their faces.

Chin Implants Before and After

Chin Implants Before and After

What does Chin Augmentation Surgery Involve?

Chin surgery is usually performed to augment a weak chin or to balance other facial features, such as a prominent nose. Cosmetic surgeons often use a chin implant, for chin enlargement. In addition to cosmetic chin surgery, facial implants are also commonly used to enhance the cheeks (for higher cheekbones). Chin implants can be combined with cheek implants or used in conjunction with liposuction surgery or other cosmetic facial procedures such as a facelift or rhinoplasty nose surgery.

Thanks to modern technology, there is a safe & permanent method to correct a receding chin and this is sought after by men and women worldwide. Chin augmentation is usually not carried out until the development of the bone is considered complete. Chin augmentation or mentoplasty are surgical procedures designed to provide a more vibrant and attractive look of distinction. Chin implants are often recommended to patients undergoing nose surgery to achieve better facial balance.

What can I expect from a chin implant?

As all patients are individual, varying results can be expected in each patient.
Chin Implant surgery will enhance your appearance and your self confidence. Realistic expectations are important to be happy with any surgery.

Are chin and cheek implants safe and will it feel natural?

Facial implants have proven to provide a safe, predictable, low-risk cosmetic surgical procedure. Millions of facial implants made from non-toxic materials such as expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) & silicone have been implanted, with no reported cases of allergic reaction. The implants, designed specifically for use in the chin come in wide shapes and sizes. The implants are custom-trimmed by your surgeon for a more natural fit.

Chin implants are made from special medical-grade materials that, when positioned and inserted, look and feel like normal bone and so you usually cannot tell the difference.

Who is the best candidate?

The best candidates for a chin implant are patients with a receding chin/ weak chin. If you have a chin that looks too small in comparison with other facial features, you would also benefit from this, for example; a chin implant can improve the neckline and make a large nose appear smaller, and so will help balance out the facial features. It can also improve a rounded face and neck.

Nose Reshaping Surgery (Rhinoplasty)

Rhinoplasty, or surgery to reshape the nose, is one of the most common of all plastic surgery procedures. Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of your nose, change the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils, or change the angle between your nose and your upper lip.

woman Nose Reshaping Surgery (Rhinoplasty)Nose Reshaping Surgery (Rhinoplasty)

It is a reshaping of the cartilage, bone and sometimes the soft tissues of the nose.

What does Nose Reshaping Surgery Involve?
The skin of the nose is separated from the supporting bone and cartilage which is sculpted to the desired shape using the technique your surgeon has decided on.

The bone and cartilage of the nose are altered to the desired shape and the skin repositioned over them giving a most pleasing result. As most surgery is carried out internally there are rarely any visible scars following a nose reshaping surgical procedure.

How long does nose reshaping surgery take?
The procedure will require an overnight stay in hospital, although occasionally, where minor corrections to the nose tip alone are required, it may be possible to return home the same day.

Rhinoplasty usually takes an hour or two.

What can I expect from the surgery?
Your expectations need to be realistic. Day by day, your nose will begin to look better and you can expect a nose that looks natural and blends harmoniously with your other facial features. The vast majority of patients undergoing rhinoplasty gain a feeling of increased self-confidence with improvement in their body image.

Recovery after Rhinoplasty Surgery

What will happen in the recovery period?
For the first 24 hours after surgery your face will feel puffy and your nose may ache however prescribed pain medication will control this. You will have bruising and swelling around the eyes, which lasts for 2 -3 weeks.

A little bleeding is common in the early days after surgery and you may be asked not to blow your nose for a week or so to allow the tissues to heal. By the end of one week, all dressings, splints, and stitches should be removed. For 2 -3 weeks you'll be asked to avoid strenuous activity with no contact sport for 6 weeks. You will have frequent follow-up visits in the months after surgery to check on your progress.

Eye Bag Removal Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Blepharoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures. Eyelid surgery is a procedure to remove fat - usually along with excess skin and muscle - from the upper and lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery can lift drooping upper lids and reduce the puffy eye bags that form below your eyes. This procedure can be done alone or in conjunction with other plastic facial surgery procedures such as a facelift.

Eye Bag Removal Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Eye Bag Removal Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Eye Bag Removal Surgery Procedure
For the upper eyelids the incision is made in the natural crease line that occurs 1 cm above the eyelashes. The incisions might extend into the crow's feet or laughter lines at the outer corners of your eyes. Working through the incisions your surgeon will separate the skin from the subcutaneous layers and remove excess fat and trim sagging muscle and skin. The incisions will then be closed with very fine sutures.

For the lower eyelids the incision starts underneath the eyelashes and extends out 1 cm or so outwards into the crow's feet area, the skin is then lifted upwards and outwards, gently tensioning the area and overlapping skin removed. Again the incisions will then be closed with very fine sutures.

How long does the surgery take?
Blepharoplasty surgery is an operation that usually takes 1.5 to 3 hours to complete using a general anaesthetic and normally includes an overnight stay at the hospital. In certain circumstances it can be performed as a day case (usually if just the upper eyelids are operated on).

What can I expect from the surgery?
Your expectations need to be realistic. The positive results of your refreshing eyes and reduced tired appearance will benefit your self-esteem and confidence and should last for years.
If you are considering cosmetic surgery you should be as well informed as possible.

Recovery after Blepharoplasty Surgery

What will happen in the recovery period?
After blepharoplasty surgery, the surgeon will probably lubricate your eyes with ointment and may apply a bandage. Some bruising and swelling will be experienced during the first and second weeks, however the majority of the swelling usually subsides after the first 10 days. Your eyelids may feel dry at first, but eye drops can help with this. Any sutures are usually removed after 5 days. Scars will form as a result of the surgery. Overall these scars heal relatively well, but will differ in each individual patient.

What is the recovery time?
Recovery varies from patient to patient and it is advisable to take it easy for the first week after surgery. Most people are ready to go out and return to work after a week to 10 days. You should keep your activities to a minimum for three to five days and avoid more strenuous activities for about three weeks.

Facelift (Rhytidectomy)

A facelift, technically known as a rhytidectomy (surgical removal of wrinkles), can reduce some of the more visible signs of ageing. A facelift smoothes the loose skin on your face and neck and tightens underlying tissue. As a result, your face will appear firmer and fresher making you look younger.

Facelift (Rhytidectomy)

What does Facelift Surgery Involve?
A face lift treatments involves the skillful removal of excess facial skin from the neck, chin and cheek areas under general anaesthetic. Starting high in the temple area the hair at the incision courses down following the curves in front of the ear round the earlobe and up behind the ear before curving gently back into the hair again. It may be necessary to add an incision under the chin which is also well hidden. Using these incisions on both sides, the skin and deep tissues are remodelled and re-draped. Stitches secure layers of tissue and incisions and metal clips may be used on the scalp. The scars will be hidden around your ears or in your hairline and will usually fade over 3 to 6 months.

How long does the surgery take?
The procedure normally takes two to three hours and usually requires a 1-2 day hospital stay.

Breast Reduction Surgery (Reduction Mammoplasty)

Large breasts can dominate a woman's appearance and make you look unbalanced and make exercise difficult or even impossible to do. Breast reduction surgery is a procedure for reshaping exceptionally large breasts surgically to increase your comfort and satisfaction. Overly large breasts frequently have a considerable affect on self-confidence and can even affect personal relationships. The aim of surgery is to give you smaller, shapelier breasts that are in proportion to the rest of your body.

Breast Reduction Surgery Procedure

The most common procedure involves an anchor-shaped incision that circles the areola and extends down in a vertical line it will then follow the natural curve of the crease beneath the breast. Excess breast tissue, fat and skin are then removed and the nipples and remaining underlying tissues are then moved to a new higher location. The skin from both sides of the breast is then brought down and around the areola shaping the new contour of the breast and sutured.

How long does breast reduction surgery take?
Breast reduction is performed under general anaesthesia and usually takes about 2 to 3.5 hours depending on each individual patient and the extent of surgery. The length of stay in hospital will be mainly determined by you, many patients are able to go home on the day of the surgery but some remain in the hospital for 1-2 days.

What can I expect from the surgery?
Your expectations need to be realistic. Most patients are pleased with the outcome and find they have smaller, lighter, and firmer breasts. You will be freed from the physical discomfort of large breasts and your body will be better proportioned therefore in most cases giving a new-found confidence.

What will happen in the recovery period?
The breast will be bandaged for support and can be removed a day or two after surgery but you will have to continue wearing a surgical bra 24 hrs a day for 1-2 weeks while the swelling and bruising subside. There will be considerable swelling and bruising of the breasts which usually lasts 2-3 weeks. Almost all the stitches used will simply dissolve but if there are any clips they will be removed after 5 days of surgery. The scars are quite lengthy and may take many months or years to settle. You will have follow-up visits in the months after surgery to check on your progress.

Depending on the individual patient recovery times will vary. You should be up and about in a day or two but your breasts may still ache occasionally for a couple of weeks. Most patients will return to work with 14 days but this is down to the individual. Avoid any strenuous activity for at least 6 weeks and limit your exercises to stretching and swimming.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Breast uplift surgery, is one of a procedure that firms and lifts the breasts to restore the former, fuller appearance of your bust line. Breasts of any size can be lifted, and many women have a breast lift because pregnancy and breast feeding have left them with stretched skin and less volume in their breasts.

Breast Lift Surgery (Mastopexy)

The surgery does not increase the size of your breasts, but it is commonly done at the same time as a breast augmentation when a bigger bust is desired, so that not only the firmness but also thevolume of your breasts will be increased.

Breast Uplift Surgery Procedure
There are a few techniques that are used in breast lift surgery. The most common way of lifting the breast involves three separate incisions. One incision is made around the nipple, another vertical incision runs from the bottom edge of the nipple to the crease under the breast, and the third incision is horizontal from beneath the breast and follows the natural curve of the breast crease. Your surgeon removes the excess breast skin and then shifts the nipple and areola to a higher position. The skin that had been located above the areola is brought down and together beneath it. Sensation is kept because the nipples and areolas remain attached to underlying mounds of tissue, which also allows the ability to breast-feed. Sometimes the horizontal incision beneath the breast and the vertical incision can be avoided in other techniques.sexy Breasts

The Forgotten Garden Tool - the Scythe

When I was studying in the Methodist Primary School, the gardener was a silent man, big and dark, but very disciplined. His room was the little cubicle below the staircase. And we kids were terrified of him because he was part and parcel of the "discipline" committee. He made sure that we would not shout, not run up and down the stair case and not dirty the school compound. He also showed us how much he loved the school too. *When I reflect on my early learning days I realise how important the small population of children was to the management committee and how precious we were in their care. Each one of us, probably less than 200 , was recognised by them and observed properly. apart from being taught well by the serious and single minded teachers.*

Many years later, I realised that he was very grateful that he had a place to stay and a job to his name. I often wondered if he went to church, if he had a family, or why he was so alone in the world. He was not chatty. And I never saw him smile. And I often wondered if any one ever invited him for a cup of coffee, or took him home for a home cooked dinner. If I were an adult then, I would garnered up the courage to invite him for a meal and I would wish that he would accept.

Besides all these thoughts, I remember the garden tool he used. I used to marvel at how he patiently slipped the scythe through the grass so that every blade was cut. He kept the school garden so neat and tidy. He also sharpened the scythe in the afternoon when it was very hot. Making the sharpening noise, he also indicated that he was not in the least lazy. He kept his gardening tools very well, shiny, glinting in the sun, clean and without any brown grass sticking to any part. Besides, he always had a pail of water near him so that he could sharpen the scythe anytime. In fact I have not met anyone who loved his gardening work as much as this gardener. Because at that time, no one wore a name tag, I never got to know his name. He was just the "grass cutter ah pah". That's a pity really, even though he was called "the grass cutter uncle who was older than our father". Old Uncle or Ah Pah was a great honour in terms of address in olden day Sibu.

By the time I reached secondary school age, the scythe was slowly overtaken by the noisy lawn mower. When I was in Sixth Form, one of the gardeners made sure that he cut the grass whenever we had additional afternoon lessons, just to let every one know that he was working!! Sometimes in the morning he would hide in the bicycle shed and the Senior Assistant had to go look for him. Those were just some of the more humourous human resource problems of our school then.

I hope these pictures will help you remember the forgotten garden tool.

By the way I am quite sure that the scythes that we had in the Primary School came all the way from the United States, thoughtfully brought in by our Amercian missionaries, as I cannot remember any one else having them outside the school.

(Note : it is still being used in the USA and it is very ergonomical.)

This article appeared in the June, 2004 issue of Countryside Magazine.

The Beauty of Scythes
Scythes have a bad name. Goes without saying, I suppose, but I have to begin this story somewhere and reputation seems a good a place as any. It is an unnecessary reputation brought on mainly by North American style scythe, that is heavy, cumbersome to use and difficult to sharpen.

A scythe (pronounced “sigh” or “sithe”) consists of a curved, steel blade attached to one end of a long, wooden shaft called a snath. Handles on the snath allow the user to hold the scythe and stand upright while swinging the blade horizontally at ground level to cut grass or brush.

Scythes have been used for centuries to mow grass for making hay, clearing land of bushes and small trees, keeping fields or lawns neat and tidy. There are two styles of scythes, the North American style and the European style, which is light, easy to use, mows grass and cuts bushes easily. Instead of leaving you bone tired at the end of mowing you feel invigorated.

My first experience with the North American style scythe came at sixteen when the 80 year old man I worked for tried to teach me to mow. He wanted to clear a back swath around the edge of a hay field I’d recently cut with a horse drawn mower. The scythe was heavy and seemed dull even though we used a sharpening stone on it. As I swung the scythe, constant cries from my mentor to “keep the heel down” didn’t help as the blade first cut air then plowed dirt. The grass mostly remained standing, some bent over and very little of it was cut (I believe the grass even laughed at me). This exercise lasted about half an hour before we both gave up in frustration. The next time I picked up a scythe twenty years had passed. It was a life changing experience.

In 1983 I purchased a 50 acre homestead with a house and large, attached barn. The farm had about 20 acres of fields much of it overgrown to brush, mainly meadowsweet, fir and poplar saplings. The brush was scattered about the fields and the saplings were edging into fields from the adjacent woods.

Planning on livestock and needing to use the fields for pasture and haymaking, I looked at ways of clearing the fields to bring them back into production. Neither being able to afford nor desiring to use gas or diesel driven machinery I looked into low-tech methods for clearing the fields.

It occurred to me that a scythe might be just the tool for cutting back the scattered brush and milkweed around the fields, and putting up hay for a recently acquired herd of milking goats. The idea of using a scythe again was not appealing but the price and environmental considerations compared to machinery won me over.

Out of pure happenstance, I received an unsolicited catalog from the now defunct Green River Tool Company of Vermont. It advertised a European style scythe outfit for mowing grass. The package consisted of snath, grass blade, sharpening tools, and instructions. The price was reasonable and the descriptive text with a photo convinced me to buy. Along with the grass blade for making hay, I purchased a bush blade to tackle the brush and saplings.

After work, throughout that summer and fall, I mowed a bit of grass or tackled brush in the overgrown fields. Going at it for an hour or two each evening, and longer on the weekends, I managed to clear the fields as well as put up four ton of hay in the barn loft. I found that I could mow a third acre of tall, thick timothy in a bit less than three hours. That worked out to be about an acre a day, historically considered the area a one person could mow in a day.

After mowing, the grass was left in the field to dry for a day or two. With the help of family and several old, wooden hay rakes we gathered the dry hay into long windrows that we heaped into conveniently spaced piles, pitchforked into a cart then carried to the barn for storage.

This experience with the European style scythe was so much different than my encounter as a teenager. To my delight, this hard work was actually enjoyable. Years later, with no animals or fields of my own to maintain, I enjoy mowing for its own sake. The mown grass used as garden mulch or compost.

Mowing grass with the European scythe is a meditative experience. As the mower picks up the rhythm it quickly becomes second nature and nearly mesmerizing; step and swing, swing and step, working your way down the field. You stop from time to time, take the stone from the holder on your belt, whet the blade a few strokes to resharpen it. You look over your shoulder and admire the neat, straight line of mown grass you have laid down, the empty row of stubble beside the tall grass waiting to be cut, breath the aroma of fresh cut hay, give a prideful sigh, and joyfully return to mowing.

The European scythe is as easy to maintain as it is to use. You sharpen the blade by peening the cutting edge with a hammer on a small anvil or jig, then honing with a whetstone. Using a grindstone, either hand driven or motor powered, overheats the steel, removing the temper from the thin blade. Hammering the blade draws out the steel, hardens it, increasing the life of the edge. A manufactured peening jig makes it simple and accurate to hammer sharpen a blade. For the experienced user this process may take as little as five minutes and usually no more than ten.

Peening may be required once or twice a day depending on how hard the scythe is used. Between peenings sharpen with a few, quick strokes of a whetstone kept handy in a water-filled holder attached to the mower’s belt. When honing no longer maintains the edge, it is time to peen.

A scythe is an excellent tool for mowing hay fields, maintaining lawns, cutting grains for human or animal feed. Use it to clear the edges of fields, mow along stonewalls, under and around fences, and on steep or wet ground impossible for heavy machinery. The scythe clears brush and rank growth along roadsides, in fields and ditches. It is perfect for mowing grass in orchards, around rocks, between garden beds, for cutting old corn and asparagus stalks. With a bush blade remove saplings along woods roads as well as clear woodlot undergrowth and culls. For this, the scythe is easier on the back than loppers.

Blades come in a variety of styles, weights and lengths to suit different tasks and mowers. The most popular are grass blades used for mowing hay fields, grain harvesting, and maintaining lawns. Convenient lengths range from 22 to 36 inches. Length selection depends on the area to cut, ground conditions, the type of grass among other considerations. The shorter sizes work well for small areas and in tight quarters, such as cleaning around garden edges or between garden beds. The longer grass blades cut a wide swath for mowing grass in large fields or harvesting grain. Grass blades are beautifully formed, graceful, thin and light, strong and resilient. A 36-inch blade weighs only 21 ounces. Grass blades are a joy to use and once you begin, are hard to put down.

Bush blades are built short, stocky and strong for the hard work of cutting woody plants. The lengths run from 16 to 20 inches. Use them to thin saplings in a woodlot or to keep back small trees encroaching on a field, for clearing brush and heavy weeds. The weight of these blades, as much as two pounds, provides momentum to slice through woody plants.

A third category, ditch blades, falls between the grass and bush blades in heft and sturdiness. Stronger than grass blades and slightly heavier, ditch blades mow grass, heavy weeds and light brush. They will not stand up to the abuse of thick woody stems like the bush blade. Ditch blades are versatile and used in places where the mower encounters a variety of plants. Lengths range from 18 to 30 inches.

The European style scythe, with a straight or bent snath, is a well balanced tool, simple, inexpensive to purchase and maintain, a pleasure to use and with proper care will last many years. Quieter than a power scythe or string trimmer, the scythe does not destroy your hearing, will not sling rocks through your window, nor fill your lungs and the environment with noxious fumes. It does not leave your body exhausted, or quivering from engine vibration. The scythe provides a pleasant physical workout at the end of which you feel good instead of beaten.

The European scythe has a beauty, an aesthetic appeal, a gracefulness that speaks to centuries of development and refinement. It has redeemed the scythe’s reputation as a clumsy, exhausting tool.
