Best of the Fests:
- The Toronto International Film Festival is currently underway; Heath Ledger's last film, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, is scheduled for its North American premiere Friday.
- Tom Ford's A Single Man won the Venice Film Festival's Queer Lion Award (given to gay-themed films) while his star Colin Firth nabbed the Best Actor prize (cue the Oscar buzz).

- Writer and producer Larry Gilbart, Emmy Award winner for M*A*S*H, passed away Friday morning. He also won Tonys for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and City of Angels and was Oscar nominated for Oh, God! and Tootsie.
