Royal Ballet of Winnipeg's production of "Wonderland"

Wonderland is a contemporary and mature re-envisioning of the tale’s characters, events, and themes that will surprise and delight audiences. The Queen of Hearts, the White Rabbit, and the Mad Hatter are all on hand, displaying generous doses of wit, camp and humour. The surreal and dark elements that lurk at the original story’s fringes are bravely realized in explosive passages of breathtaking dance and innovative multimedia. Shawn Hounsell, acclaimed choreographer and RWB alumnus, has transformed Wonderland into a multi-sensory experience, with edgy and athletic movement, an inventive electro-acoustic soundscape, and unexpected visual treats. This is Alice like you’ve never seen her before!

"We all create our own Wonderland inside our heads...I’m inviting the audience to join Alice as she invents her special fantasy world." ~
Shawn Hounsell, Choreographer

Tour cities: Saskatoon, Regina, Medicine Hat, Banff, Kelowna, Vancouver, Nanaimo, Victoria, and Ottawa. (beginning March 16th - April 30th, 2011)

"One night at London's Royal Opera House, 2,000 people in their best attire chatter excitedly as they take their seats for what promises to be the ballet event of the year. The curtain rises on Oxford, 1862, and Lewis Carroll reading stories to three little girls — one of them called Alice. When Carroll takes her photograph, he disappears underneath the camera cloth only to emerge in the form of a White Rabbit and jump down a rabbit hole. Alice plunges after him and the audience watches as the Royal Ballet company attempts to do the unimaginable: introduce a new full-length story ballet to the repetoire..."
