Bradbury Building + Grand Central Market

On location sketches from last Saturday (6Mar10) at Grand Central Market and the Bradbury Building.

Unexpected Event:
While I was attempting to make a sketch of the liquor store (nothing could go wrong here) at the Market a drunk man caused a spectacle yelling at cops and walking in and out of on coming traffic tying up multiple lanes. The disorderly man then chose one lane to yell at the cops from a safe distance, that is until a driver got tired of waiting and started honking, now he's mad at the driver. The drunkard then starts yelling at the driver and eventually slaps the guys side mirror on a seemingly new car. At that moment feeling irritated, rightly so, the driver got out of the car, the drunk man immediately ran away. I need to hunt down a picture of him getting arrested a friend from class captured.

Pacific Theatre Interior + Exterior

Pretty similar to the other assignments from "Sketching the Environment." Do thumbs of different views and then pick one to elaborate on.

Exterior Home Studies

These were from another homework assignment for "Sketching the Environment." 3 thumbs from different angles/approaches, then finalize the sketch. It was pretty open, you could take the final sketch as far as you wanted. I think my favorite is the second image, of one of the Victorian homes from the historic section of Carroll Street here in LA.

Film Studies: Immortal Beloved + Quick and the Dead

(1st assignments in my Environment classes at Concept Design Academy)

Film Studies from "Immortal Beloved" for Rodney Fuentebella's Environment Design Course
Do two thumbnails for each scene
1) Value Study to see where contrast leads the eye, see lighting effects, notice use of darks + lights and why
2) Dissect, simplify, and see what the key components are in the scene, pay attention to composition and why things work or don't work in it


Film Studies from the "Quick and the Dead" for Ed Li's Sketching the Environment Course
Create simple thumbnails to dissect composition. Look for the 4 types of spaces in each frame. 1) Deep 2) Flat 3) Limited 4) Abstract
To learn more about these types of space I suggest reading:

"The Visual Story" by Bruce Block

(there is a new edition but I haven't seen it so I can't recommend it)

I went further in detail then the assignment required, the point was to stay simple and see the key elements in the scene. For learning purposes I would suggest doing LOTS of simple ones instead of my over the top ones.
